Read Nancy Herthers Digital Natives and Immigrants Essay

Read Nancy Herthers Digital Natives and Immigrants - Essay Example A sad parent tried to sue MySpace website because their daughter got sexually assaulted (Fleming, 2008). The US District Court Judge dismissed the claim by stating that it was her parent’s duty to protect their child not of MySpace. Fleming describes the whole process of how the online community works. She portrays it in such a light that there is repulsion felt by the reader even in processes like making friends, setting up an online profile or sharing or liking each other’s posts to spread the message. Fleming’s style is a little exploitative when she stresses too much on one side of the picture because online networks like YouTube, MySpace and Facebook are not only used to advertise the most personal thoughts across the world. Different online groups have grown on such platforms where people have find their old friends. They start many good things like projects, work groups and businesses together. However, Fleming needs to portray it in such an emotionally re pulsive light because the crimes committed under exploitation of social media are so heinous that one needs to exploit the truth to make the point. Sometime persuasion requires little bit of exploitation to get the point

Julius Caesar - Ethos, Pathos, Logos Essay Example for Free

Julius Caesar Ethos, Pathos, Logos Essay During Julius Caesar, in one of the most famous scenes Shakespeare wrote, Antony influences the audience, soon turning the mourning crowd into a rioting mob. Antony persuades the Romans in his speech through Ethos, Logos, Pathos. Antony’s speech undermines the conspirators even while it appears deferential to them. Antony uses Ethos to catch the audience’s attention. He states â€Å"For Brutus is an honorable man; so are they all, all honorable men† (Act 3, 81-82). Antony never directly calls the conspirators, including Brutus, traitors; he is mainly calling them honorable in a sarcastic manner that the crowd is able to understand. This is the irony in what he is saying. Later in the scene he goes back to into a sarcastic tone and states â€Å"O masters, if I were disposed to stir your hearts and minds to mutiny and rage, I should do Brutus wrong, and Cassius wrong— who, you all know, are honorable men. I will not do them wrong. I rather choose to wrong the dead, to wrong myself and you, than I will wrong such honorable men†(Act 3,120-126). Antony is making fun of righting the â€Å"honorable men. † Antony reassures the crowd he is â€Å"not to disprove what Brutus spoke† but to tell them what he does know. He is using logos, logic. Antony had â€Å"thrice presented [Caesar] a kingly crown† he refused it each time. He then asks â€Å"Was this ambition? †(Act 3, 95-96). He makes the crowds think whether Brutus’ motives where true or just out of jealousy. â€Å"You all loved him once, and not without reason. Then what reason holds you back from mourning him now? †(Act 3,101-102). In this line he is asking the audience why should they applaud Brutus for killing Caesar. They had loved and admired Caesar at some point so why should they not mourn him now. Towards the end of Antony’s speech he begins using pathos causing the crowd to feel sympathy for Caesars and his wrongful death. He mentions that for the audience to bear with him. His â€Å"heart is in the coffin there with Caesar† (Act 3,104-106) he then takes a minute to recollect himself. The audience begins to -realize how â€Å"Caesar has had great wrong† (Act 3,109) By how Antony weeps for Caesar makes the Romans realize what all the conspirators did was terribly wrong, because Antony, although he is a party animal he is still a noble man. In the end Antony had the better advantage when it came to using Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. Antony, proving himself a noble man, got the Romans to see the wrong deed and caused them to seek revenge.

Mercutio of William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet Essay -- Shakespear

Mercutio of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet Although the story of Romeo and Juliet does not focus on Mercutio, to many, he is one of the most interesting characters in literature. His name puns on the word mercurial which meansunpredictably changeable. His unsteady behavior makes him wise beyond his intentions. Arecurring trend in Shakespeare’s plays is the existence of a witty fool and many foolish wits. People such as Romeo, Friar Laurence, and Capulet are people who are made out to be wise, but,in the end, they make all the wrong decisions. Mercutio serves as a foil to all these characters. He is considered by every character in the play to be a fool, but, in the long run, he is the one whois the wisest. He brings a sense of comic relief as well as a reality check to many of the character’s inthe play. Although he can be seen as a laughable youth, his character serves to show how manyof the so-called wiser characters are actually fools. The audience is first introduced to Mercutio in Act one, Scene two . Romeo speaks of having a dream and believing it to be true. This leads Mercutio to his famous Queen Mab speech. When he breaks down after his speech, Romeo states, â€Å"Thou Talk’st of nothing (I.iv. 96).† Mercutio responds with his first wise quote, â€Å"True, I talk of dreams, Which are the children of anidle brain (I.iv. 97-98).† This comment does not refer to Romeo’s dream of love alone. Friar Laurence’s dream of peace in Verona proves false. In Act two, Scene four ,when the nurseappears in her gaudy attire acting as if she is the owner of the Capulet’s servant Peter, it isMercutio that churlishly reminds her that she is of the servant class as well. Mercutio’s commentprovides an alternative view of real... ... again, according to Mercutio, there is no such thing as fortune. There is the outcome of one’s actions. Romeo is unknowingly calling himself a fool for his own careless judgment. Shakespeare is loved for his story lines, but he is respected for the characters he has created. It is ironic how in Romeo and Juliet characters such as Capulet, Romeo, and Friar Laurence are made out to be wise but in actuality make bad judgment. It is also ironic that Mercutio is depicted as a childish youth when really he is the character with the most insight. Shakespeare uses Mercutio’s insight as a contrast to every other character to show how ridiculous the other characters actually are. If you pay attention to the plots and story lines, this play is a love story. If you understand Mercutio’s purpose, then this play is one of the greatest satires on human emotions ever made.

Amazing Grace Review

In the 18th century millions of men, women and children were taken from their homes in Africa and sold into slavery. Few survived the slave ships, and even fewer lived through their slave labors. Some people thought the slave trade was wrong, but to find someone who had the courage to stand-up to make a stop was hard. â€Å"Amazing Grace†, is a movie based on a true story. Written by Steven Knight and directed by Michael Apted, it is about William Wilberforce and his quest to abolish the slave trade in the United Kingdom, and his battle against the British parliament of the 18th century. The film narrates William Wilberforce’s journey through time with many flashbacks. William, the son of a rich merchant, studied at Cambridge; this is where he met his close friend and future priminister, William Pitt. Pitt encourages Wilberforce to outlaw the slavetrade and fight against parliament. With his support and advice on how to conquer the government, they get over 3,000 signatures wanting to abolish the slave trade. Without his connections it would have taken Wilberforce much longer to achieve these goals and to see progress. Wilberforce committed many years, so many that he neglects his health, and becomes very ill. Wilberforce then meets Barbara Spooner, who pushes him to keep on going and fight for what he believes and gets him back on his feet. â€Å"Amazing Grace† is a portrait of faith and persistence. These themes are very evident as Wilberforce’s devotion to abolish the slave trade is number one priority- even over his own health. Wilberforce and Pitt also must have faith and believe that they will win the battle. This also leads into another theme, fighting for what you believe, and the theme of racism The theme that occurs continuously and ties all the above themes together is monstrosity. This theme is also shown throughout the novels of To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee) and Frankenstein (Mary Shelley), when racist acts are made in To Kill A Mockingbird, and the real monster is revealed today’s society in Frankenstein. Throughout the movie, William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) shows the characteristics of a hero, and people around the world look up at him for his effort. Since the beginning of the movie, William Wilberforce shows signs of sympathy and care. When passing by a suffering horse, he stops and makes sure the abusing stops. Small details like this already give the viewer an instant idea of what sort character he is. As well as the amazing in-role acting the sound and lighting are the finishing touch. The lighting increases many aspects of the movie. When Wilberforce had flashbacks and was thinking of the slavery and the slave ships, the lighting became darker and the music also adjusted. To the viewer it isn’t that obvious until you specifically look for lighting and other technical edits. But without these things the movie the impact the movie gives wouldn’t be as great. As well as lighting, the camera angles where also very specific. There would always be close up shots when difference of facial expressions were shown, this emphases more emotion in the movie and also attracting the viewer. Amazing Grace, is a extremely intense and an instructive movie, as well as interesting and exciting. The viewers really feel pulled into the story and really get motivated to stand up for what they believe. William Wilberforce really was a role model sending out positive messages and leaving the audience with a winning smile on their face.

Hypnosis essays

Hypnosis essays First, lets define hypnosis: an artificially induced altered state of consciousness, characterized by heightened suggestibility and receptivity to direction (Websters, 2000). The best way to describe hypnosis is as a state of intense relaxation and concentration, in which the mind becomes remote and detached from everyday cares and concerns. In this relaxed state the subconscious part of the mind is best able to respond creatively to suggestion and imagery. It can focus on the things you wish to change and on the ways you can best do so, free from analytical or anxious thoughts (Lee, 4). You are, however, not asleep or unconscious. You are in an altered state of consciousness in which you let things happen through your subconscious mind rather than trying to make them happen with your conscious mind. Because you are deeply relaxed, the suggestions given to you by the hypnotist will be acted upon more easily by the subconscious (Lee, 9). Posthypnotic suggestions are those that will be carried out by you when you come out of the hypnotic state. First, it is important to understand how your mind works. We have three separate and distinct parts of our mind. These three parts are: the conscious mind, the subconscious mind, and the unconscious mind. Each having different responsibilities, with very little communication among each other. Imagining that the parts of our mind are at different levels- first, we have a conscious mind. Our conscious mind is actively working right now. Below our conscious level of awareness, is where we will find our subconscious mind (Lee, 12) . Pleasure Principle and the Reality Principle (II) The pleasure principle and the reality principle are the desire for immediate gratification vs. the deferral of that gratification. Quite simply, the pleasure principle drives one to seek pleasure and to avoid pain. However, as one grows up, one begins to learn the need sometimes to endure pain and to defer gra...

Harmonization of Geospatial Data Essay Example

Harmonization of Geospatial Data Essay Example Harmonization of Geospatial Data Essay Harmonization of Geospatial Data Essay Dry. Hafiz Seekers. 2013 Academic World Education Research Center. All rights reserved. Abstract Databases of digital spatial data present an integral part of the command and control systems in emergency systems (e. G. , the Integrated Emergency System, the Medical Rescue Service). Data for these databases does not necessarily have to come from a single source. They can be acquired from various spatial databases; they can possess different geometric, topological, or thematic properties that can be transferred into a particular database. The resulting database must be harmonicas in such a way that the user would be able to use it as a homogeneous database assessing unambiguously identified geometry, topology, and thematic information. The aim of the paper is to inform about a new project which proposes a general procedure of harmonistic spatial databases for the command and control systems and to create the mathematical models for that procedure. Keywords: Conformations, geographic data, harmonistic, mathematical modeling; * ADDRESS FOR CORRESPONDENCE: Sara Hookahs-Markova, Department of Mathematics and Physics, University of Defense, Conjunctiva 65, 66210 Born, Czech Republic, E-mail address: Taleteller, V. , Markova, H. , S. Arabians, M. Hofmann, A. Harmonistic of Spatial Data, Reproached Information Technology Computer Science. [Online]. 2013, 3, up 541-546. Available from: World-education-center. Org/ index. PH/P-lets 1 . : Present Situation in Knowledge of the Spatial Data Harmonistic Problems 1. 1 . Harmonistic of spatial data There are relatively vast territorially localized databases in the Czech Republic used in numerous branches. Basic databases are created by the government administration (the Czech Office for Surveying, Mapping and Caster CLC. KHZ and the Army of the Czech Republic CAR) and they are intended for activities associated with the functions of the state (Taleteller, Hookahs, Hofmann, Achromatic, 2009). These databases fully cover the territory of the Czech Republic, they are created according to the obligatory rules and they are continually updated. These rules are based on both the original national standards and the international standards, especially the Open Spatial Consortium (COG) recommendation in the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe (INSPIRE) framework (in case of the CLC. KHZ and the Ministry of Agriculture) and the Defense Spatial Information Working Group (SWIG) standards (in case of the Ministry of Defense MOD). Apart from these basic databases, other databases especially thematic are created in the Czech Republic, for example databases of soil types or databases from the fields of geology, forestry, energy, landscape protection, leisure activities, etc. Both the government administration bodies and commercial organizations have responsibility for these databases. Harmonistic is addressed generally in the Czech technical standard CNN ISO 860, however, its real impact on the problems of digital spatial data is errantly not addressed satisfactorily neither on the national nor international levels. It is possible to use many of the above-mentioned databases as the source base for decision-making processes in the command and control systems of either the rescue service or the armed forces. Source data can be employed not only for a simple orientation in the terrain but also for solving tasks related to particular decisions such as large actions of the emergency service components, military threat to the country, prediction of the landscape changes during extreme weather conditions or industrial accidents and so on. There are many tasks where the source data are combined with each other and new data are created by applying mathematically defined procedures (Taleteller, Balsa, Racer, Hofmann, Hookahs-Markova, 2012),. Such systems may employ data coming from various sources. Data sources can form a part of the system or they can be attached to it only for the duration of a particular task. Nevertheless, the data must be harmonize either permanently or temporarily in such a way that a homogeneous database is established for a particular task or a particular solution. The properties of this database are then fully reflected in solving he supporting tasks serving for the decision-making processes. Those properties affect also the quality and reliability of the decisions. Many organizations are engaged in the process of data harmonistic and data the Multinational Spatial Copulation Program (MAGIC) project (http:// magic. HTML), Forerunner Institute for Computer Graphics (http:// wry. Stimulated. Eh/home. HTML), etc. 1. 2. Ways of solving harmonistic As the primary causes of the heterogeneity of spatial data the following issues are generally considered: the differences in definition of conceptual models being based n various historical and current standards; the interpretation of conceptual models for a particular territory and a particular situation; use of different coordinate systems and different map projections; applying different techniques for data editing and analysis (Arabians, 2009; Arabians Vela, 2010). The real harmonistic consists in connecting the conceptual models, I. E. N unifying definitions of objects and phenomena, their coding and unification of their geometric, topological, and thematic properties. For this, it is possible to use data dictionaries of the Thesaurus type. Unification of data 542 thin a homogeneous data environment is the next step in which the basic database is considered as reference and other data sources are being connected to it with respect to the given rules and procedures. The complete system of harmonistic and creation of a homogeneous database can be realized either ad hoc or with the help of prepared formalized tools or programs (Fighting et al. 2011; Ghana Godchild, 2002). Harmonistic process alters the properties of a final homogeneous database which is necessary to be considered when using this database, especially in decision- making and controlling processes. If the homogeneous database is used for spatial analysis as a base of decision-making processes then the analysis results are considerably influenced by these properties. Therefore, it is necessary to characterize these properties and to take them into account in the command and control process. 2. Project Principles, Goals and Methods 2. 1. Project principles The fundamental objective of the project is to design a complex system for harmonistic the heterogeneous spatial data obtained from various sources in a way that the homogeneous database is used in the command and control systems. The basic databases provided by state organizations (standard data sources) will be used as the primary sources. The data coming from the international projects such as INSPIRE, MAGIC, or Vamp will be considered as the secondary sources. Only the international data sources expected to form a significant part of input data will be used. The raw data provided by the remote sensing sensors including imagery acquired using non-metric cameras will be considered as supplementary sources. The connections geometric, topological, and thematic between all sources of data mathematical procedures so as to describe them unambiguously and to establish aroma procedures of data harmonistic. Also the inner characteristics of homogeneous data will be studied, especially their spatial and thematic accuracy and certainty, and further, the influence of these inner characteristics on reliability of decision-making if these decisions will be based on spatial analyses. . 2. Project goals The goal of the proposed project is to design a general procedure of harmonistic of spatial databases for command and control systems. The sub goals are the following: Analysis of properties of spatial data coming from existing resources with respect o their semantics, geometry, themes, structure and techniques of its formation. The analysis will cover both the standard products and the products of non-standard methods, such as oblique imagery acquired by remote sensing methods. 2. Analysis of influence of spatial data properties on the conceptual scheme of a reference database; semantic definition of stored features and phenomena; and their geometric, topological, and thematic properties. 3. Modernization of the above-mentioned influences and creation of mathematical models and their formalization in an appropriate environment so that the database loud be homogeneous for the use in the command and control systems. 4. Application of mathematical models for an assessment of quality of harmonicas and homogeneous database with respect to the typical tasks used in the command and control systems. 43 5. Research of a complex influence of the homogeneous database on solution of analytical spatial tasks in support of command and control, and also on reliability of 6. Verification of the proposed methods and models in dealing with spatial support of crisis management with a focus on cartographic visualization of a crisis situation angel; on optimization of rescue vehic les transportation both on routes and in the terrain; on visualization of evacuation procedures, etc. 2. 3. Project methods Necessary analysis of non-homogeneity sources in primary data will be performed in the first stage of the project. These will be especially sources operated by state authorities and organizations, and also sources used in accordance with international agreements and cooperation. Analysis of sources that may be obtained from cooperating organizations will follow. Geometric, topological, and semantic non- homogeneity will be examined within the analyses and their causes (e. G. Hysterical principles of data collection, geographic nature of objects and phenomena) will be determined. These effects are usually manifested in a different geometry of the database objects. Other effects will be examined, such as use of other conceptual models, other interpretation of accepted standards, etc. In the next stage, the ways of solving both geometric and semantic non-homogeneity will be sought. These ways will be modeled using mathematical tools, especially mathematical statistics, p robability, and fuzzy logic (Novo ¤k, 2006; Hookahs Creates, 2010; Food Atkinson, 2002). Mathematical modeling will be applied as an important tool in system modeling and simulation; analysis and forecasting of processes, phenomena, behavior and states in order to provide an appropriate working tool for simulation or for creating models of complex spatial systems with the help of fundamental spatial data. It is possible to use fuzzy logic in various real decision-making tasks in which the propositional or predicate logic would be insufficient (Hookahs-Markova, 2012). It allows assignment of membership to the sets having the range from O to 1 (including marginal values). Therefore it is possible to express the concepts such as partially, a little, almost, etc. This expression of a membership to a set which is only partial is often necessary in the domain of spatial data. When dealing with inhomogeneous, it is possible to consider an approach of probability and also a level of membership according to a particular data type (the function of a membership assigns a fuzzy value to vaguely defined sets and therefore it does not represent probability of a phenomenon). A combination of both approaches is possible (Taleteller, Hookahs-Markova, Hofmann, 2012). Subsequently, the aggregation function will be defined. It will allow integrating the individual layers of a inhomogeneous database into a final data layer. Data of related objects of the input layers of spatial data will be merged using a mathematical model and a specific value will be assigned to the resulting object using a function of several variables. The number of variables will correspond to the number of merged layers of spatial data (Burroughs Frank, 1996; Cries, 1993; Demonic Kill, 2004). Proposed mathematical models will be verified in pilot studies of selected typical tasks from a command and control domain of the components of the emergency services and armed forces of the Czech Republic. The typical tasks will be selected to characterize such activities of the abovementioned components that are considerably frequent. Project results will be employed as methodical instructions for their implementation within the command and control systems, especially in a domain of emergency services and in the command and control systems of the CAR. Another field of application of the project results is a domain of data standardization both at the national level and in the frame of the standardization processes of EX. and NATO. Proposed works on the project are aimed at increasing the efficiency of activities elated to the use of non-homogeneous data and information in the command and control systems so that the operational components have not only their proprietary databases but also relevant materials concerning the quality and reliability of data in use. Based on this information, they will be able to use these materials for their decisions and, alternatively, to correct these decisions appropriately. Works on a project will use methods for collection and collation of information, its analysis, proposal of initial hypothesis and mathematical models, testing of functionality of hypothesis and models using functional samples and functional models and methods. After this testing the particular procedures will be proposed and further verified in simulated environments of the command and control systems. Among other data, primarily the data provided by the CLC. KHZ and the MOD of the Czech Republic will be used. These data will be considered as reference. Further, data obtained from the international projects such as MAGIC or INSPIRE will be tested as well as data from the field of pedagogy, geology, climatology, forestry, etc. Aerial photographs acquired using both metric and metronomic cameras and satellite imagery will form a significant part of data sources. A special team will be created for the purpose of working on the project. Its members will come from the Department of military geography and meteorology and the Department of mathematics and physics of the Faculty of military technology of the University of Defense. 4. Characteristics of the Expected Project Results The expected project results will be particular mathematical models for evaluation of accuracy and reliability of spatial data and information, both the original and generated using combination of original data and data derived from analysis and ATA synthesis. Verification of the proposed models in the selected command and control system will represent another result of the project. After verifying, the models procedures used in their systems. This is the case of the CAR and also the components involved in supporting the emergency services of the Czech Republic. The main goal of this paper was to present to the readers our current project in its initial stage and our future intentions. The authors believe that the project will help to increase the efficiency of activities related to the use of non-homogeneous data ND information in the command and control systems in the Emergency Systems and Military Command and Control Systems.

Five Spelling Rules for Silent Final E

Five Spelling Rules for Silent Final E Five Spelling Rules for Silent Final E Five Spelling Rules for Silent Final E By Maeve Maddox Many English words end in the letter e. In an earlier stage of the language, many of these final es were pronounced. Now, however, unless the word is a foreign borrowing, the final e is silent. Although final e is silent, it usually has a job to do. Here are the five rules for the use of silent final e. 1. Silent final e makes the vowel say its name. Compare the pronunciation of the following pairs of words: con cone cut cute mat mate In cone, the e makes the o say O. In cute, the e makes the u say U. In mate, the e makes the a say A. This first and most common kind of silent final e makes the letter say its name. 2. English words dont end in v or u. The e at the end of have and blue do not affect pronunciation. The e is there because the words would otherwise end in v or u. Impromptu is one of the few exceptions to this rule. 3. Silent E after the letters C and G soften their sounds. The letter C can represent the sounds of either /k/ as in cat or /s/ as in cent. The letter G can represent the sounds of either /g/ as in gum or /j/ as in gym. Silent final e after C and G indicates that the sounds are /s/ and /j/. Ex. lance and charge. Without the silent final e, these words would represent the pronunciations /lank/ and /charg/. 4. Every syllable must have a vowel. In words like candle, pickle, and people, the final syllable can be pronounced without a vowel, but in English, every syllable must have a vowel. (Would we really want to write pebbl or littl?) 5. Sometimes the silent final e has no purpose whatever. In words like are, and ore, the silent final e does not affect the pronunciation or provide a missing vowel, or keep a word from ending in v or u. This is the e that Mrs. Spalding (Romalda Spalding, The Writing Road to Reading) calls no-job e. Like Everest, its there. The word resumà © is often spelled in English with the French accent aigu to indicate the untypical pronunciation. The final e at the end of the Italian musical borrowing forte (loudly, powerfully) is pronounced like a long a: /for-tay/. Ex. This measure is marked forte. The final e at the end of the French borrowing forte (strength, strong point) is silent, although many speakers pronounce this word the same way they do the musical term. Ex. Cooking is not my forte. Industrious critics will point out exceptions that Ive failed to mention, but in most cases, the five rules apply and are useful to know. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Potential security threats on a home personal computer Essay

Potential security threats on a home personal computer - Essay Example In this context, one can easily shop and buy goods online without necessarily having to travel to the business premises. This mode of conducting business has boosted computer crimes, by creating an alternative avenue for defrauding unsuspecting customers, mostly through phishing (Quarantiello, 2006). Phishing involves the creation and designing of rogue websites by criminals, imitating websites belonging to genuine businesses, with the intention of capturing personal information such as credit card numbers, passwords, among others; which is commonly known as identity theft. After attaining the details, criminals can access bank accounts and make purchases without the knowledge of the bank holder (Quarantiello, 2006). The internet comprises of numerous sites, most of which are genuine but with some designed to spread malicious programs and computer viruses (Gollmann, 2005). These sites are difficult to suspect and they create curiosity in the user by displaying attractive messages in form of pop up menus, prompting the user to click, for example to unhide a free gift.

Issues And Features Of The Audit Process Term Paper

Issues And Features Of The Audit Process - Term Paper Example Independent auditing is encouraged in organizations in order to protect the potential investors and shareholders from any misrepresentation of the financial statement or fraudulent claims that are often made in the public companies (Gray and Manson, 2008: 98). Moreover, after the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) introduced in 2002, the appointment of the independent auditor becomes mandatory for improving the auditing and accounting procedure. Many organizations are seen to appoint independent auditors, who are certified public accountants, responsible for checking their business transactions and financial records, yet not being affiliated with it (Singleton, T.W., and Singleton, A.J., 2010: 13). However, independent auditing is seen to suffer from a large number of threats such as intimidation threat, trust or familiarity threat, advocacy threat, management threat, self-review threat and self-interest threat. Therefore, safeguarding the independence of the auditors becomes a major area of c oncern. This report focuses on the safeguards for the independence of auditors. Safeguards to save the Independence of the Auditors On recognizing the significant threat of independence in the auditing process, the organization must decide on some safeguards in order to save the auditors. Some of the approaches that are considered by organizations are as follows: Mandatory rotation in the auditor: In a case where an external auditor is serving a particular client for many years, they often end up building relationships with their clients, which make them less skeptical about their work than that they would have been otherwise. The SOX Act has made it mandatory for the public company, who is the partner-in-charge, to rotate their auditors, at least every five years. However, for non-public companies, there are no such requirements for rotation of auditors.

Effects of Platelet-rich Plasma Injections Thesis

Effects of Platelet-rich Plasma Injections - Thesis Example History of Injury Most of the patients had missed at least one game or practice within the last year due to an elbow injury (93.8%) with only one individual making all their games and practices (Table 2). In addition the majority of patients reported diagnosis of a UCL injury, although four (25%) had been given no diagnosis. The diagnoses included tear to the UCL (83.3%), partial UCL tear (8.3%), stress fracture (8.3%) and torn flexor tendon (25%). Many individuals were diagnosed with multiple types of injuries; hence the percentages indicate what percentage of diagnosed patients had a particular type of injury. Treatments that had been taken for the injury varied across rest, therapy, steroid injection, PRP or surgery. All patients had been given PRP injections, as this was a criterion for inclusion in the study. In addition, each patient had used at least one other method, with one patient using all five types, and eight patients (50%) using all but steroid injection as a method of treatment. Rest and therapy were the most popular treatments aside from PRP, with 14 patients (87.5%) using rest as a method of treatment, and 15 (93.7%) reporting use of therapy. Surgery was also popular, with ten patients (62.5%) reporting using surgery as a treatment for their UCL injury. Most patients had a single PRP injection, with only one patient having two and one having three. Time from the PRP injection to first picking up a baseball to throw ranged from two weeks to 16, with an average of 7.3 weeks. Patients were asked to give level of pain on a scale of 0-10 both before the PRP injection and the first time they picked up the baseball to pitch following the injection. The average score before the injection was 3.6, while afterwards it was 6.6. A total of 11 patients (68.8%) reported decrease in pain between before the PRP injection, and the first time they picked up the ball afterwards, four (25%) reported an increase in pain, while one did not give a pain level for after PRP injection. The result for the individual that did not give a pain level can be disregarded for this calculation, making the total proportion of patients that reported a decrease in pain to be 73.3%, and the proportion that reported an increase in pain to be 26.7%. There was some correlat ion between level of pain and weeks recovery time, but not in all cases (Figure 1). Figure 1: This graph shows the level of reported pain per patient compared with the number of weeks of recovery before they picked up the ball to pitch. Reported complications were relatively low, with only three patients (18.8%) reporting a long term increase in pain following the treatment, one (6.25%) reporting tingling or numbness, one (6.25%) reporting increased pressure and tightness, and four (25%) reporting decreased mobility in their elbow. Satisfaction with the PRP treatment was given on a scale of 0 to ten, with an average of 6.8. However, the average does not give the true picture, as responses were dichotomous, with most patients being either highly happy

Mount Sinai Hospital Pediatric Cardiolody issues Term Paper

Mount Sinai Hospital Pediatric Cardiolody issues - Term Paper Example One of the reasons behind Mount Sinai Hospitals huge success is the management practices it adheres to. Mount Sinais view of organizational effectiveness is more wholesome, as opposed to profit-making ventures. A critical look at Mount Sinai Hospital shows that as an institution, it sees effectiveness as a culmination of the integration and application of the three dimensions of management: focus, structure and time-horizons. As is postulated by Robert Quinn and John Rohrbaugh, when the three dimensions they form four dynamic and competing models of organizational effectiveness (Tompkins, 2004). The first model is the human relations model which internally focuses on people who make up the organization and is emphatic on the need to promote structural flexibility, intra-organizational cohesion, motivation and training, as the means of actualizing organizational effectiveness, as can be seen in the human relations theory. Mount Sinai Hospital can be seen to have perfected the use of the human relations models. This exemplified by the fact that the New York Magazine in 2009 listed 129 of Mount Sinai Hospitals physicians to its Best Physicians List. One of the ways this healthcare services institution has been able to do is by sustaining competitive recruitment processes for its medical and non-medical staff. To this effect, Mount Sinai Hospital sticks to: commitment to patients welfare; the candidates wellbeing; and roundedness; and overall grades that the candidates scored during his medical training. These measures are usually observed if the recruitment exercise is being done to applicants who wish to work as physicians. Mount Sinai Hospital uses previous commitment to community work in medical or healthcare institutions as the yardstick for measuring the love for the patient (commitment to the patients welfare). Experience and academic records are also considered

Strategy enter mode Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Strategy enter mode - Essay Example However, failures in regard to these plans cannot be avoided, especially if the enter mode chosen is inappropriate for the target market involved. The entry in a foreign market can be a risky initiative, especially when the global market is not stable. However, choosing an appropriate enter mode can help to reduce the risks involved in such plans. The enter modes available to firms that aim to enter a foreign market are discussed in this paper. The literature developed in this field has been reviewed so that all aspects of this study’s subject are adequately explained. Moreover, five studies have been selected and are presented separately for highlighting important points of the issues under discussion. It is proved that a variety of entry modes is available to firms that wish to internationalize their activities. Still, not all these modes can be equally effective; indeed, the risks involved in the target market can be many. It should be also noted that the benefits from entering a foreign market may not be clear in the short term. For this reason, a firm trying to expand its operations globally should have alternative strategies available in case that the enter mode initially chosen is proved faulty. When trying to enter a foreign market, a variety of criteria is used in order to decide which enter mode is most appropriate. The resources available for supporting this project can highly influence the relevant decision (Levi 2006). On the other hand, the experience acquired through similar initiatives in the past can help a firm to choose an appropriate strategy for entering a foreign market (Levi 2006). In addition, when trying to entering a foreign market a firm is expected to face a variety of forces (Albaum and Duerr 2008). Managing these forces can be extremely difficult depending on the firm’s market position and its objectives (Albaum and Duerr 2008). For this reason, a firm

The Equitable Division of Labor Within the Home Essay

The Equitable Division of Labor Within the Home - Essay Example While one was a full-time job in the sense of being never-ending and the other was only full-time as defined by law and when in public, this was deemed a reasonable exchange. What was truly unfair about this arrangement was that neither party had a choice in the matter. If the woman wanted to work or the man wanted to stay at home with the children, neither one could do so and still retain the respect of the community. As times have changed and it is now necessary for families to have two incomes in order to survive, it is becoming increasingly more acceptable for men to take part in traditional ‘woman’ duties. As it becomes more acceptable for men to take part in these duties and more recognized that one person cannot do all things, more men are doing things that have been associated with women’s work. For example, there are many men today who will go to work in order to allow the wife to go to school and get an education. Although this is still usually after the man has managed to get an education and a good job, the idea of one half of the couple working while the other goes to school seems to be, today, more evenly split regarding which half is pursuing education. This can be proven by looking inside any college classroom where there are just as many young wives as there are young husbands. There are also many couples today where both halves are working and going to school at the same time so that both can get ahead in their careers without losing time. The sacrifice they make is not whether one will get an education and the other will not, but the lifestyle that they live while they’re getting their education, opting for smaller apartments in less expensive parts of town. There are also many of these equalizing activities taking part inside the home. Many men today are in charge of making sure the children have eaten a healthy meal, and sometimes the wife, too. You see just as many men in the grocery store as women and some of them  even have the children with them.

Comparing the scientific method and the engineering method of problem Essay

Comparing the scientific method and the engineering method of problem solving - Essay Example Conversely, engineering is based on the tenets of coming up with new inventions that have not been in existence before. However, it is worthwhile noting that both scientific and engineering approaches may be integrated to solve a problem. Nevertheless, the need to create better understanding necessitates a comparison of scientific and engineering approaches in relation to problem solving. Due to objective differences, science and engineering follow different processes in coming up with solutions. A scientific approach begins with a question seeking answers to a particular phenomenon. This is then followed by a background research on the various studies related to the phenomenon at hand. The background research may touch on directly related studies considered to be standard or accurate. As such, a scientist is able to identify loop holes, if any, in the current studies giving guidance on the particular problem at hand. However, more importantly is that a background research enables formulation of an appropriate hypothesis. The hypothesis purports to offer a better explanation compared to already existing ones in relation to given problems. As such, before advancing further, the proposed hypothesis must first be tested against the existing ones. This implies that a new proposition must explain a phenomenon that has not been explained by the already existing ones. A valid proposed hypothesis is then subjected to a number of tests to prove its workability and validate its predictions. If the proposed hypothesis shows the predicted results, it is accepted and adopted as the new best hypothesis giving a solution to the particular problem in play. However, if a hypothesis arrives at already known phenomena it only increases credibility of already existing hypothesis rather than replacing them. Conversely, if a hypothesis fails to meet the predicted threshold, it is rejected. However, a hypothesis normally undergoes a couple of experiments to eliminate room for error.

Benefits of hunting Essay Example for Free

Benefits of hunting Essay For my research topic I have decided to go over the benefits of hunting. I think these reasons are numerous, and cover a wide variety of topics. Some of which include, controlling the animal population, helping to maintain balance in the ecosystem, connecting with nature, participating in something with a rich tradition, and also to provide healthy organic food that you know exactly where it came from, and what was done to it. There are definitely other benefits to hunting, but they are probably almost too many to list, or touch on all of them. I will also try to tackle some of the proclaimed downsides to hunting. And example of that is people constantly complain that hunting is killing, and yes it is but such a small part for most of us it is not why we hunt. That being said every piece of meat in the super market is also killing, and the animal never had a chance, and may not have ever been as healthy or happy as it could be. The audience for this paper would be those against hunting, or who don’t have any knowledge about hunting. My reason for choosing this topic is that I am an avid hunter, and the only differences I see for what I do when hunting vs. what a cattle ranch does is that I know everything going on in what I’m doing. Basically I know where the animal was, I know who shot it and how it died, I know the animal is healthy, that it has had a good life, and was not confined to a tiny cage packed with others. Long story short, I know my animal I harvested is probably healthier than just about anything from the store. Also as humans we have a long history of hunting. I’m not sure when we started hunting, though for my paper I think it will be an excellent argument for the tradition of hunting, but I know we as a species have been doing it for as long as we can remember. Not only that, but hunting is something often passed down from father to son, and is mainly why hunting has survived this long against so much backlash. I know for me personally hunting with my dad was some of the most fun times, and fondest memories, that I will ever get to have, until I pass it on to my kids. Hunting gets attacked from a lot of angles, the only one I really think that has any argument is one from a vegan. That is a person who really has no connection with any sort of harvesting animals at all. Honestly I respect their opinions, and wish that they would also do mine. Hunting goes beyond people going out and shooting animals, and then posing with them in pictures, which I believe is all they see. They miss out on the tradition, the actual â€Å"hunt†, hunting does not mean killing, something any hunter can tell you. Not to mention all the bonding time with friends and family, and last the experience of just getting away from it all and being in the great outdoors. One last thing for the vegan argument is that from an evolutionary stand point it is pretty much impossible to argue against hunting. Humans grew up the evolutionary ladder partly because of our abilities to get better at hunting. Someone who provided a couple hundred pound animal complete with meat and hides had to be more valuable than someone who just picked berries. Being vegan is also a choice, its not exactly the way of nature. Sure some animals eat only plants, but things like wolves just can’t do it. Eating meat and hunting are part of Earth, and I would say that 99. 99% of kills done by humans are quicker, and cleaner, than those done by animals.

Teens and Sex - Sex and Disease :: Exploratory Essays Research Papers

Sex and Disease    Since the beginning of the semester we've been working in groups in order to complete a mid term report, based on our picked topic. I'm part of the group Sex in the New Millennium. We as a group focused our attention on three main categories, sexuality, and sexual preferences, Pregnancies and abortions, and finally sexually transmitted diseases.    Sex is the key ingredient that most companies and advertising agencies are using to sell their products. And as a result we the viewers (being what ever age we may be) are the true victims. You turn on the television and the first thing you see is someone or something being sexually exploited. Daytime TV and talk shows are long time abusers of this. As a result more and more people are practicing sex all over the country and the world. And coeincidentliy the ages of these participants are getting younger and younger. STDs are the at a all time high.    What are STDs ? STDs are sexually transmitted diseases, formerly called venereal diseases (VD), which are transmitted by direct sexual contact. Some are considered among the most serious diseases of the world . Any person who is sexually active or is thinking about having sexual activity should be familiar with the symptoms, prevention , and treatment of these diseases. Most forms of STDs may be treated and cured in the early stages, but putting off treatment can be dangerous.    The germs that cause sexually transmitted diseases can survive only for a few seconds in the air, so the diseases are transmitted only by direct body contact. Like most other diseases we do not know where or when sexually transmitted diseases started. To add to the list of STDs there is the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) which may lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).    In North and South America combined, there are estimates that up to 2 million people are currently infected with the HIV virus. The World Health Organization estimates that 8-10 million adults and 1 million children worldwide are infected with the AIDS virus. By the year 2000, 40 million people may be infected with the virus . More than 90% of these persons will likely reside in the developing countries. Based on 1989 data, AIDS is the number four cause of death in males ages 15-54.

Preventing Marine Engine Pollution :: Marine Engines Environmental Essays

Preventing Marine Engine Pollution Currently 12 million marine engines are operated in the United States. These marine engines are among the highest contributors of hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions in many areas of the country. HC and NOx produce ground-level ozone, which irritates the respiratory system causing chest pain and lung inflammation. Ozone can also aggravate existing respiratory conditions such as asthma. Boaters can join many others who are working to make a difference in preventing pollution from marine engines. Improving the Marine Engine The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working to develop and implement emission standards for commercial and recreational marine engines. The marine industry has been working to develop technology for a new generation of low emission, high performance engines. Recreational boaters will begin seeing this new generation of engines in coming years. Boaters Can Prevent Pollution Even with the new technology, the cooperation of individual boaters is essential in the effort to improve air quality and prevent pollution. Boaters can make a difference that will help protect the environment now and in the future by adopting the following practices: ï‚ · Limit engine operation at full throttle. ï‚ · Eliminate unnecessary idling. ï‚ · Avoid spilling gasoline. ï‚ · Use a gasoline container you can handle easily and hold securely. ï‚ · Pour slowly and smoothly. ï‚ · Use a funnel or a spout with an automatic stop device to prevent overfilling the gas tank. ï‚ · Close the vent on portable gas tanks when the engine is not in use or when the tank is stored. ï‚ · Transport and store gasoline out of direct sunlight in a cool, dry place. ï‚ · Use caution when pumping gasoline into a container at the gas station. ï‚ · Carefully measure the proper amounts of gasoline and oil when refueling. ï‚ · Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule. ï‚ · Prepare engines properly for winter storage. ï‚ · Buy new, cleaner marine engines. By combining these strategies, boaters can reduce pollution from marine engines and help improve air quality across the nation and protect public health. What are the human health and welfare effects of these pollutants? The engines that are covered by this proposal contribute to ozone formation and ambient PM and CO levels. These pollutants are subject to our National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), and states that exceed NAAQS levels are required to take measures to reduce emissions. In addition, these engines also emit Mobile Source Air Toxics.

Punishment in America Research Paper Essay

Abstract   Punishment in America has mainly four goals: Retribution (deserved punishment), Deterrence, Societal protection and Rehabilitation. Ultimately all this punishment are aimed at maintaining societal order, but the justification for the sentence are closely tied to the American values of justice and fairness. However the justice sought by crime victims often conflicts with the fairness to the offenders. It’s therefore important to note that while punishment in America is meant to correct the offender the effectiveness of method used on the criminal determine the outcome to correct the anomaly. Restorative justice has proved to be a new method of restoring justice among the offenders.               Ã‚  Introduction   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Punishment reflects the dominant values of particular moments in history. By the end of 1960s for example, the number of Americans who were sentenced to imprisonment decreased because of widespread commitment of rehabilitating offenders. By contrast since 1970s record numbers of offenders have been sentenced to prison because of an emphasis of imposing strong punishment for the purposes of retribution, deterrence and incapitation. At the beginning of 21st century voices are calling for addition of restorative justice as a criminal sanction. According to George and Smith, 2005, there are mainly 4 types of punishment: Retribution/Deserved punishment, Deterrence, Societal protection and Rehabilitation. Effects of the 4 Types of Punishments Retribution/Deserved punishment: Retribution is a punishment inflicted on a person who has infringed on the rights of others so deserve to be penalized. Retribution means that those who have done a particular crime should be punished alike in proportion to the gravity of the crime or the extent to which others have been made to suffer. In retribution punishment, offenders must â€Å"pay their debts†.   Some scholars claim that the desire for retribution is a basic human emotion. They maintain that if the state does not provide retributive sanctions to reflect community revolution at offensive acts, citizens will take the law into their own hands to punish offenders.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Under this view the failure of government to satisfy the people’s desire for retribution could produce social chaos. Using the concept of just deserts or deserved punishment to define retribution, some theorists argue that one who infringes on the rights of others deserve to be punished. In this view, punishment should be only for the wrong inflicted and not primarily to achieve other goals such as deterrence, societal protection or rehabilitation (George and smith, 2005) Deterrence: The roots of deterrence are traced back in 18th century in England among the followers of social philosopher Jeremy Bentham. He adopted Bentham’s theory of utilitarianism, which holds that human behavior is governed by the individuals’ calculation of the benefits versus the cost of his /her acts. Before stealing money for example, potential offenders would consider the punishment that others have received for similar acts would thereby be deterred. There are two types of deterrence: general deterrence which presumes that members of the public on observing the punishment of others will conclude that the crime outweighs the benefits. For general deterrence to be effective, the public must be constantly reminded about the likelihood and severity of punishment for various acts (George and smith, 2005)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  The punishment must be severe enough to instill fear of the consequences of committing a crime. By contrast specific deterrence targets the decision and behavior of the offenders who have already been convicted. Under this approach, the amount and kind of punishment are calculated to discourage that criminal from repeating the offence. The punishment must be severe enough to cause the criminal to say â€Å"the consequence of my crime were too painful, I will not commit another crime†. The concept of deterrence has obvious difficulties (Nagin, 1998). Deterrence assumes that all people think before they act. As such deterrence does not account for people who commit crimes under the influence of drugs or alcohol or mental disorder. The effectiveness of deterrence is limited as well (Nagin, 1998). A study on deterrence effects of punishment would have to examine the impacts of different forms of criminal sanction on various potential lawbreakers. Therefore while legislation often cites deterrence as a rationale for certain sanctions, no one really knows the extent to which sentencing policies based on deterrence achieve their objective. Societal protection: This assumes that society can keep offenders from committing further crimes by detention in prison or by execution. Offenders can be confined within secure institutions and effectively prevented from committing additional harm against society for the duration of their sentence. Capital punishment is the ultimate method of societal protection. Research has suggested that a relatively small number of offenders commit a large number of violence and property crimes (George and smith, 2005). Questions arise about how to determine the length of the sentence. Presumably offenders will not be released until the state is sure that they will no longer commit crimes. Therefore the limit of this punishment is that it cannot predict accurately which offenders will commit more crime upon release. Rehabilitation: This refers to the goal of restoring a convicted offender to a constructive place in society through some form of training or therapy. Americans want to believe that offenders can be treated and resocialised in ways that allow them to lead a crime –free productive life upon release. Over the last hundred years, rehabilitation advocates have argued for techniques that they claim identify and treat the causes of criminal behavior.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Rehabilitation focuses on the offender. Its objective does not imply any consistent relationship between the severity of the punishment and the gravity of the crime .according to concept of rehabilitation, offenders are treated, not punished and they are returned to the society when they are cured. Studies on the results of rehabilitation have challenged the idea that criminal offenders can be cured (Margolis, 1974). Conclusion   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The above methods have proved to be not too effective and the new approach to punishment is restorative justice. Restorative justice view crime as more than a violation of penal law. The criminal act practically and symbolically denies the community. This approach means that losses suffered by the crime victim are restored and the threat to the local safety is removed and the offender again becomes a fully participating member of the community. Shifting the focus to restorative justice requires a three way approach that involves the offender, the victim and the community. This approach may include mediation in which the three actors devise ways that all agree are fair and just for the offender to repair the harm done to victim and community. References George, F. Moral Sentiments Essay

Pursuit of wealth is a necessity for a proper and well standard life in today’s world. Wealth is an essential commodity today and one has to have it for a respectable living and that is why people are in a run to achieve it not matter the opportunity cost. The main question is that is money always worth all the opportunity cost and is its achievement at all cost a right or wrong thing? These are the basic points that I will be discussing in my paper below with respect to my opinion of the poor man’s son situation, as described by Smith in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, that he was not mistaken in setting out on the path of wealth acquisition and further on I would discuss what I would have done if I was in the same situation.. There is no doubt to the fact that wealth is necessary for a comfortable living. Wealth improves the quality of life by providing a person with the luxuries he carves for and with the satisfaction of these cravings comes utility which in result makes a person feel good. There is more to life than living in a budgeted amount every month and feeling content with whatever is within ones limited achieving power. Life is about exploring new horizons, about enjoying it to its fullest and in today’s world all of this cannot be achieved without money. It provides a person with a sense of peace because with money comes power to achieve every material thing possible. Lack of money do not makes one life hassle free or tranquil but instead provides one with the tension to achieve even the basic necessities of life which now are not available without money. Hard work is necessary to achieve great things in life, laid back attitude do not take a person anywhere. High achievers do not let fate decide for them but work hard enough to have their fate in their own hand so pressuring oneself to achieve more in life and test one limits is actually the correct way to life live as per me. While it cannot be denied that more utility comes from enjoying the beauty of a garden then seeing a machine work as Smith explained in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, but it can also not be ignored that with the power to buy or have things one need which comes with the expenditure of money also provides a different sense of utility to a person. So I don’t think that the poor man’s son did anything wrong in working hard to fulfill his wants and dreams and instead of being critical of him one should appreciated him for fulfilling his dreams in the right manner, he at least did not cheat or lie his way to achieve what he wanted. I would have done the same had I been in his position. I would have also worked my way to achieve money if I had wanted it. But I would not have done that at the expense of that happiness in life which comes naturally along the way and have nothing to do with the amount of money one possess like enjoying a friend birthday treat, having time to enjoy the beautiful scenic beauty around me etc. I would have maintained the level of balance in my life with my priorities set in a proper order and money would be one of my priorities but not the top most priority. So I support the poor man son’s in his struggle to achieve what he wanted to achieve and his hard work is commendable but I think that he should have made money the only motive of his life and instead had enjoyed things coming in his life along the way because thirst for money can never be quenched so one should know the limit to have it if one want a peaceful n emotionally n spiritually better life. Benefits of Single Gender Education Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Benefits of Single Gender Education - Essay Example Girls perform better in single sex schools than boys. Therefore, people choose single gender school for bright future of females. Female students also avoid sexual harassment in single gender schools. Research shows that boys and girls have different ways of learning because of difference of mind. Single gender schools are the solution to this problem. Few researchers provided conflicting evidence on importance of single gender schools. Financial aspects, race and moral values like issues are easy to handle in single gender schools and to overcome class difference. Therefore the research of decades has proved that single gender schools are beneficial than co-education institutes. Research proved definite decline in distraction in single gender schools. According to Hubbard & Datnow (2005), in teenage students, lose focus on their work due to attraction in opposite sex (pp. 121). This declines their progress in educational activities. Boys and girls spend more time in attracting each other and give more importance to their getup and outlook. Mostly girls are found lost in the classrooms as they reach their puberty. Boys are more distracted in the presence of girls as it is part of their nature and personality. Therefore, single gender schools are vital for good educational output from the boys. ... Girls and boys can come with normal dressing and makeup in single gender schools due to non-availability of opposite sex (Hubbard & Datnow 122). This saves time and keeps the mind committed in their work. Research has proved better performance of girls in single sex schools. Parents are now attracted towards single gender schools for females for making them better educated for future challenges. Girls with mathematical and scientific expertise can produce even better results in schools (Datnow, Hubbard & Conchas 186) Girls are highly affected by the sexual harassment from the opposite gender (Hubbard & Datnow 122). Their mind always works to take safety measures to avoid sexual harassment. Boys show more confidence towards this activity and tend to attract girls and tend to sexually harass them in coeducation schools. Single gender schools have the advantage of protecting girls from sexual assaults and harassment. Girls and boys have different mind structure and hobbies that become p ermanent part of the personalities. Gender difference has connection with the initial lifestyle and habits and priorities. This creates a lot of difference in approach of both sexes towards education. Hence, it is always difficult to observe same understanding of a subject in both genders. One will understand the subject matter easily and the other gender may feel it difficult. Uniformity of understanding of scientific and mathematical subjects be best achieved in single sax schools and colleges. According to Datnow, Hubbard & Conchas (2001), â€Å"some argued that the single gender educational settings promote stereotypical attitude towards the opposite sex†. (pp. 186). The conflicting evidence of single gender

WHAT IS FEMINISM AND HOW MIGHT IT INFORM POLITICAL ANALYSIS Essay

WHAT IS FEMINISM AND HOW MIGHT IT INFORM POLITICAL ANALYSIS - Essay Example Having identified and adopted as basic, the need for a greater recognition of the woman, certain grey areas still exist among feminist. Issues like roots of inequality, best approach to attain equality, the criterion or criteria to serve as basis for evaluating gender related issues, probably all of these differences emanate from increasing pressures for women to be aligned to traditions which may have originated as a result of the male dominated society. A particular school of thought with liberal inclinations believe that both sexes should be considered as equals socially, socio-politically and economically, without regards to whatever differences there might be when physiological analyses are made. The elimination of a society where certain groups dominate as elites is the driving force behind certain radical feminists. Still there are the modern feminists whose primary concern is centered on the right of women on the integrity and autonomy of their bodies as pertaining reproducti ve health rights that incorporates abortion rights, contraceptives use right maternity cares etc; rights of women at workplace that entails the right to maternity leave and equal pay; the right to be protected from violence within and outside a domestic relationship such as wife battering, sexual harassment and rape, ultimately encompassing all other kinds of discriminations that arise as a result of gender differences. With feminism, the advocates, through grass root mobilization intend to cross boundaries that are based on social status, race culture and religion, with the definition of an effective feminist movement as one that deals with issues which are universally recognized as detrimental to the women folk consisting of rape, prostitution and incest while at the same time addressing issues which may not be obtainable everywhere at the same time like Bureaucracies that seeks to impede the advancement of women beyond certain levels in the corporate world, as it obtains in the w est, female "circumcision" otherwise known as female genital mutilation observable in parts of Africa, and the middle-east. Feminists also abhor the scenario where women are viewed primarily as sexual objects neither do they appreciate patriarchy (2) and oppression against women (3) the core of the different kinds of feminism that obtained today is, the general well being of the women that takes into consideration their rights, interests and every other issue as it relates to them. The different feminist types have advanced different ideologies. Egalitarian and protectionist distinctions in feminism has been postulated by certain feminist who argue that while equality of both male and female gender is the primary pursuit of egalitarian feminism, the use of legal means to shield women against abuses such as masculinist (4) employment and divorce laws. Yet there are other schools of thought among feminist with a more radical approach who believe there is no clear cut distinction in fe minism and argue that without a legal framework in the first place egalitarian feminism would fail considering that it would need the law for a successful campaign. Within the radical feminist, advocates of separatism have also been observed whose major campaign thrust is the complete separation of human beings in the society based on gender differences. The definition and classification of a human being along gender lines is seen by yet another class of feminist as constructions of the society.

The prophet Mohammed Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

The prophet Mohammed - Essay Example However Prophet Mohammed enjoyed his responsibilities and everyday jobs during his stay with uncle. The way he overcame the tribulations has imbued me a lot with the real meaning of spiritual pursuit. To begin with, Mohammed was able to draw the care and attention of the uncle’sfamily by his appreciative nature and sincerity. His presence had brought blessings and prosperity to Abu Talib’s home. According to Huseyin Algul (14), it was his appreciative and honest character that made him well-known for many years. His bravery and high concern to truth and justice also make me mull over the essential qualities required for a true believer. For instance, while travelling to Syria together with his uncle Abu Talib, he was questioned by a monk and was recognized and admired for his brave qualities. Moreover, he always opposed injustice and supported people to fight against robbery and other evils. The people of Makka admired Prophet Mohammed for his character and deeds and co nsidered him praiseworthy. People loved him for his honesty and titled him as ‘al-Amin’ which meant trustworthy and this title impressed Khadija to marry him. He played vital role in settling the conflicts that arose during the reconstruction of Ka’ba. ... The prophet convinced the world of the multiple responsibilities of a true believer through his own heavenly deeds. He not only worked to eradicate injustice but also to eliminate all sorts of evils prevailed in the society. All the dishonest and unfair activities of people disappointed him very much and forced him to stay in caves for certain periods of time. Subsequent to his stay in caves away from the city, God gave him the duty of Prophet Hood. Khadija, Ali and Abu Bakr were some of the first people to accept Prophet Mohammed’s invitation to Islam. This phase of his life obviously points out to the need of internal piety and prayer before we set forth to undertake a mission. Prophet Mohammed had to face lot of challenges during the spread of Islam. The people including the slaves who got converted to Islam were harassed and betrayed by the idol worshippers. This slowed down the mission of Prophet of spreading the principles of Islam. He was not supported by anyone but was tortured and ill-treated by everyone. He was not let down by these activities but remained determined and continued his fight to fulfill the mission. His commendable attitude and uphill struggle proved him worthy in fulfilling his responsibilities. He never showed any act of revenge to his opponents but demonstrated his greatness by forgiving them. This added to the admirable qualities of Prophet Mohammed and enriched his popularity. Prophet Mohammed exhibited sincerity and simplicity in his living which attracted every individual to his morals and persuaded them to accept the principles of Islam. Obviously, this is the emotional stature he expected from every individual who accepted the faith. As Al-Jubouri (91) comments, prophet Mohammed was not just a messenger of

The myth of original of Islam and how the I slam presented and use Research Paper

The myth of original of Islam and how the I slam presented and use example from Holy Quran and comparing it with the first story of creation in Genesis in the Bible - Research Paper Example reement in claiming that Adam was originally formed from the mud, that transforming a bunch of mud into an alive being is performed by God, that the formation of Adam took place before the formation of his companion Eva and that she was formed from the ribs of Adams (Von Rad 1973). But the Quran recounted that Eva was formed from the body of Adam only not identifying if it was from his ribs. It was recounted in the Bible that God gave Adam the ‘breath of life’, whereas in the Quran it is narrated that God gave Adam a ‘heavenly spiritual breath’ (Barto 2009, 88). This essay thus compares the Biblical and Qur’anic account of the Creation and the Fall of Man. The Bible begins with the beginning of time, the Creation. It is a complicated narrative that dominates the first chapter of the first book of the Bible, fittingly referred to as Genesis, and expands into the later chapter, where the story progresses and trails the story of our first parents, Adam and Eve. According to Katheer and Kamal-ad-Din (2001), obviously, the Christians read a similar Bible even if they referred to it as the Old Testament, and they usually understand it in a different way from its Jewish authors. However, the Muslims—the third group of Monotheists—have their own distinct rendition of such prehistoric episodes in a matching Scripture, the Quran, which they similarly worship as the Word of God. The description of the Quran of the absolute beginning of time, even though the same with that of the Bible in several points and meaning, both stipulate a supreme creation from naught, for instance, and on the Grand Designer’s crafting of humankind, is not specified in the continuous storyline of Genesis. The Quran is an anthology of God’s revelations to Muhammad over the final two decades of his existence (Sawma 2006). They are partitioned into 114 Surahs, but several of these Suras in all likelihood enclose multiple revelations. The Quran, therefore, is a compilation of

Interview Essay Essay I conducted my interview with Mrs. Michelle G. Escala; a woman with simple dreams and hopes in life. I approached her with all the kindness, respect, and humility. I started my interview by introducing myself and my purpose for conducting the interview. I was quite nervous during my interview, but I was still able to deliver my prepared questions. Mrs. Escala showed kindness to me during my interview. I could sense her sincerity and confidence while answering all my questions. She is a teacher at Tarong Elementary School, who is willing to inspire pupils and students to learn and to live the value of their existence. She also said that we must also accept the fact that everybody is not equal in all aspect; we must acknowledge the weaknesses of the pupils and then teach without expecting too much. Teaching has deadlines that must be met, which creates pressure  and the feeling of constantly being rushed. She also said that you must not be absent in your class because it’s not you that will be affected, but the students. Even though there is a reason for you to be absent, she added, you must give them some assignments or activities before the day you’re not there so that their day won’t be wasted, or maybe you must make it up to them on the day that your back. She said that what she is trying to achieve with her students is for them to learn, to digest what she taught in class, and hopefully they will be inspired to live with the values she is instilling in them. Now, I have more and better idea and understanding of how to achieve my goal, and my goal is to become a Certified Public Accountant.

The Importance Of Public Sector Undertakings Economics Essay

The Importance Of Public Sector Undertakings Economics Essay ABSTRACT Public sector undertakings (PSUs) are considered to be vital and crucial pillars for strengthening countrys economy. The prime purpose of starting public sector enterprises was to fabricate infrastructure for economic growth and economic development. Since their birth PSUs have played an essential role in achieving the goal of economic development. Various factors such as deterioration of financial performance of PSUs, rising fiscal deficit forced Government to adopt a radically new approach towards the working of PSUs. The policy measure implemented involved Disinvestment of public sector undertakings (PSUs) .During the regime of P.V Narasimha Rao, entire new economic policy of Liberalisation, Privatisation, and Globalisation (LPG) was introduced in India in the year 1991.Dr Manmohan Singh was the finance minister who successfully implemented the policy of Liberalisation, Privatisation, Globalisation (LPG) into India. The goal of Disinvestment policy was as follows: Improving the financial performance of PSUs. Generating resources to reduce the fiscal deficit. Promoting extensive public participation (including employees). INTRODUCTION Public sector undertakings (PSUs) are the companies established, maintained and controlled by the Central Government of India having 100% stake in it. In 1947 when India became independent, the country was confronting with a variety of socio-economic concerns which had to be resolved. India was mainly agriculture dependent economy with poor infrastructure facilities, no knowledge about investment, pathetic industrial base and low level of savings. There was wide difference in incomes of different people. The private sector neither had the necessary resources, trained managerial staff nor the ability to undertake risks involved in long term projects which forced the state government to intervene in all the sectors of economy. The type of problems faced by the country in all domains including economical, social obliged the Government of India to focus on public sector enterprises (PSEs) to empower self -dependent economic development. The holistic outline of public sector undertakings in India is heterogeneous mixture of service industries, manufacturing industries and infrastructural industries. The basic objectives of starting public sector enterprises in India were as follows: Generate employment opportunities. Reduce gap between incomes of different people by redistribution of wages. Promote rapid economic growth. Improve essential infrastructure for economic development. Support development of small and medium size enterprises (SMEs). Central public sector units are widely diversified in products and services from steel manufacturing, instruments and machine tools, road transport, power generation, mineral mining, coal mining, manufacture of heavy machines, telecommunication equipment, equipments for thermal power station. Over the last five decades, huge investments have been done in public sector enterprises to expand their production, employ new emerging technologies. As on 31st March, 2005 there were 237 central public sector undertakings out of which 10 fall under the category of enterprise under construction, 144 are from field of manufacturing/producing goods and 83 under the head of enterprises providing services. From the Table-1 it is evident that initially at the commencement of First Five Year Plan, only Rs.29 crore was the total investment for 5 enterprises. After gradually increasing the budget, at the commencement of Fifth Five Year Plan, the total investment reached whooping Rs.6237 crore and the n umber of units became 122.By the end of the fifth Five year plan, total investment touched Rs.15534 crore and the number of enterprises reached 169.From the data, it is quite clear that there has been increasing trend of investment from the commencement till the end of fifth five year plan, a rise of 149.06 % is observed. Similarly a hike of 57.70% in investment was examined from the start till the end of eighth five year plan. The investment made in public sector in 2005 was Rs.3, 57,849 ,an increase of 2.24 % from 2004.It can thus be concluded that there is increasing tendency towards investment made in the different five year plan. TABLE 1: DISINVESTMENT The dictionary meaning of word disinvestment is opposite of investment. Investment means putting money into something with the hope to generate profits from it. So disinvestment means to pull out money from the investment. Initially central government had 100% stake in all the public sector enterprises, but due increasing fiscal deficit government is forced to sell 5 or 10 % stake to the public, thereby generating income for government spending. This way the government is losing full control over the corporations, but has no other option. Many times the government finds it very difficult to fulfil all the financial obligations of public sector enterprises, hence undergoes rigorous resource crisis. To bring back countrys economy on right path, disinvestment formed an important part of structural reforms carried on by the government. The two most important reasons which favour disinvestment are as under: Offer financial support to public sector undertakings (PSUs). Develop effectiveness efficiency of the public sector enterprises. The resources raised from the sale of the stake of enterprises must be utilized for clearing past debts and thus reduce interest burden of government. Principal goals for privatising the PSUs The key objectives for privatising the PSUs are, as under: Discharge huge amount of public resources blocked in non-strategic public sector enterprises divert them towards more social issues like primary education, health and necessary infrastructure. Decrease the public debt. Encourage wider public participation by releasing shares in market. Help the government reduce interest burden. To facilitate the growth of the nations economy. Freeing of tangible and intangible resources like labour blocked in maintaining public sector enterprises reorganizing it towards high priority areas which have scare resources. Some additional benefits from privatisation The other advantages to be gained from privatisation are: Disinvestment would picture the private firms towards more market discipline, compelling them to be more effective in their operations, working style. They would act in more responsibly and professional manner by responding to market forces at a greater pace. This would lead towards insertion of corporate governance into privatised companies releasing them from the government control. Disinvestment would yield in fairer distribution of wealth among different individuals, as the shares of public sector enterprises would be offered to small investors and employees. Disinvestment would have a great impact on capital markets, as the more stock inserted into market would bring in more liquidity allowing small investors with easier options to exit from market. It would result in forming more precise benchmarks for estimation of value, pricing. Opening of vast portion of public sector for private participation would raise economic growth benefitting nations economy, employment prospects and tax collections in near future. In many sectors like civil aviation, insurance, telecom, the introduction of private sector has brought in more customer satisfaction by delivering variety of products and services at cheaper rate and better quality. This even increased competition in the market. In case of civil aviation people were fed of Air-Indias services and were demanding entry of private players into field of aviation. The economic reforms along with the public sector reforms were mainly focussing on improving the effectiveness, efficiency production output. Nowadays disinvestment, privatisation is grabbing everyones attention as government is disinvesting stake in 5 to 6 companies every year. The government is planning to divest about 6 companies in year 2011. The New Industrial Policy states that a part of the Government stake in the public sector enterprises would be offered to various financial institutions, mutual funds (MF) and small investors in order to promote large public participation. In the current era of globalization, disinvestment would provide the motivation needed for the public sector corporations to make their mark in the list of top global companies. The Government of India formed a committee under the leadership of Shri V.Krishnamurthy to guide through the various characteristics of the process of disinvestment. It was Dr C Rangarajans committee reports suggestions which reso lved complex and complicated issues related to disinvestment. Similarly to a sports or a revenue department, an entire new department for disinvestment was formed which could solely focus on disinvestment issues, corporations which can be divested. During the NDA government rule, Shri Arun Shourie was the disinvestment minister. When UPA-1 regime started, disinvestment ministry had to be merged with finance ministry due to the mounting pressure from left parties (who are socialist attempting to reduce gap between rich poor) who strongly opposed the formation of disinvestment ministry. Large number of corporation which were divested fell under the category of petroleum oil exploration sector followed by metal, mining and minerals sector. There are basically two approaches to the process of disinvestment: First approach in which the PSUs under the guidance of government issues fresh equity shares which can be brought by small retail investors, QIBs, financial institution, Mutual funds. Second approach in which the government sells it stake directly to the concerned public sector enterprises, interested retail investor, large financial institution.
